Rosina - Rossini's The Barber of Seville ENO

Rosina - Rossini's The Barber of Seville ENO

In September 2015 I made my debut in the role of Rosina in the revival of English National Opera’s award-winning production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

It was a privilege to return to ENO to perform in Jonathan’s Miller’s elegant and much loved production of this opera. This production has been something of a national institution at ENO - now in its twelfth revival. Transporting audiences back to 18th century Seville, this sunny adventure follows the escapades of the barber Figaro as he assists Count Almaviva to prise Rosina away from her lecherous guardian Dr Bartolo.

The Barber of Seville is an opera packed full of wit, with a sparkling score. We had brilliant guidance from the team at ENO led by director Peter Relton and conducted by Christopher Allen. For this revival we had a super young cast and we were delighted to be on stage with the wonderful Baritone Andrew Shore in one of his signature roles as Dr. Bartolo. Performing in the stunning London Coliseum theatre is always such a joy and to hear the audiences laughing so much at the comedy on stage was amazing.

On 19th October 2015 a performance was recorded and broadcast live to cinemas throughout the UK. ENO Screen’s live cinema broadcasts create a unique cinematic experience of opera for audience members across the globe. Multiple HD cameras (which are so discrete in the theatre!) provide unusual angles and close up views of the action on stage and in the orchestra pit.  It was a great feeling knowing that so many people across the country had the opportunity to see the production in this way. I was personally delighted that it was shown back home so lots of friends had the chance to see it and the Mersey Wave Choir members, who I work with in Liverpool, took a coach trip to The Lowry in Manchester. Lots of people there had never seen an opera before but it was brilliant to hear from so many afterwards that they had enjoyed the experience so much!
